The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings
J.R.R. Tolkien wrote the masterpiece of fantasy literature in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien created such a compelling world that almost all modern fantasy is based either whole or in part on his work. Some proto-science fiction and fantasy was written before The Lord of the Rings and there were many myths and legends from around the world, but Tolkien was the first to put Celtic, Germanic, and Scandinavian legends together with his own fantastical mind to form his own unique world and story.
The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy consisting of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. The trilogy covers the history of the war of the ring in Middle Earth at the end of the Third Age. The Hobbit is basically an introduction to the ring and how it was obtained. The Hobbit is more of a children's story, while The Lord of the Rings trilogy is a deeper series more suitable for slightly older children and adults. Loyalty, bravery, love, and eternal standards of right and wrong are on their best display here. The books are a must read for all lovers of fantasy and the heroic quest!
