Pioneer and American Indian Crafts
American Indians and pioneers, mountain men, and longhunters are fascinating aspects of American history that most boys love (or should love) their crafts and culture! W. Ben Hunt wrote The Book of Indian Crafts and Lore probably the best book on American Indian crafts for young people, but it is not available new. It can be located on used book sites such as Amazon.com. Julian Salomon wrote another excellent book on the subject The Book of Indian Crafts and Indian Lore many years ago, but it is still available new in reprint. With these two books, a boy could create almost any item that was used before the coming of the white man. Other good books include Woodcraft and Indian Lore by Earnest Thompson Seton and Native American Crafts and Skills by David Montgomery.
For the mountain men and pioneers, Mountain Man Crafts and Skills, also by Montgomery is an excellent starting point. Other good resources include A Pilgrim's Journey by Mark Baker and Recreating the American Longhunter by Joseph Ruckman. These two are probably too advanced for younger boys, but teen-aged boys should enjoy them and be able to use them.
