Science, Building, and Hobbies
Science and hobbies should be of interest to many young men and there are some good books for use in the beginning. The American Boy's Handy Book, already mentioned, has a lot of good ideas of things to build and make and scientific nature study. The Boy's Omnibus is another great book in a similar vein, but with its own unique concept;, however it is out of print now and can only be found online or through specialty used book stores. For boys interested in woodworking, The Boy Joiner and Model Maker is an interesting book, although it is best used with a parent helping, since it is not the most basic book.
Good field guides on rocks and minerals and related geology are readily available, although parents may want to go over the historical geology aspect with their children, as they may not agree with the position taught by the books. National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Rocks and Minerals is a good guide, although young beginners may want to start with something like the Peterson First Guide to Rocks and Minerals.
