The Sherlock Holmes stories are a bit more frightening than some of the other books listed here, and may not be appropriate for young children, but are good books for 4th or 5th grade level and up. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories around the turn of the last century and they have lost very little to this day. Some terms or items are outdated, but the stories are still easily followed.
