Outdoor Activities
Boys should love outdoor activities! There is so much to do with a little bit of land, some tools, and some ingeniousness. One of the best books for general outdoor fun is an old book by Dan Beard, The American Boy's Handy Book. While it was written about 100 years ago, boys have not changed much and things that they were interested in then, they still like now. Subjects covered include camping, hiking, fishing, outdoor games, nature studies, and crafts. It is not just an outdoor book, covering ideas for indoor activity as well, but most of the focus is on the outdoors.
Camping and hiking are a lot of fun and there have been some good books on the subject written specifically for boys. Boy's Book of Camping and Wood Crafts by Bernard S. Mason is an old book, but a top resource for camping and woodcraft. The Boy Scout Handbook is a good book for outdoor skills, but also consider the Handbook for Boys, the original Boy Scout Handbook from 1911. There is a lot of fascinating information in this original that is not found in any of the modern handbooks, like instructions for building a log cabin and making a bow and arrows. The Boy Scout Field Book is another good option for more specialized outdoor information that the regular Handbook may not discuss.
